The Other

A new media music video that seeks to explore the theory of “gaze”

CONCEPT

“Existence precedes essence,” Jean-Paul Sartre

Combining film, sound and Open Frameworks, The Other is a new media music video that seeks to explore the theory of “the gaze,” a term first brought to fruition by Jacques Lacan. The gaze touches upon the psychological state that comes when one becomes aware that they are being watched. Sartre extrapolates upon this idea in his book “Being and Nothingness” where he describes our awareness of the gaze of another allowing us the ability to become aware of our own presence and thus existence. METHODOLOGY + PROCESS

Art direction involved conceptualizing the music video including theme, tone, visuals, sound design and music production. The filming was done in New York City using a Canon EOS Rebel T5i DSLR Camera. 11 medium and close-up shots were used in the post-production. The Slit-scan effect was achieved through openFrameworks [ ofxSlitScan ]. Recordings of piano and vocals performed by Katherine were brought in Ableton Live for mixing and production.
